My Uncle bought me my first camera aged 10, he was an artist and an inspiration when growing up in Somerset. From then on all I ever wanted to be was a photographer. I graduated from Norwich School of Art with a First Class Honours degree in Photography before moving to London and assisting some of the industries great fashion, music and portrait photographers. I then started out on my own and built a list of clients, Musto, Yamaha, The National Trust, NHS, SKY and my portrait work has appeared in Vogue, Vanity Fair, The Observer, The Guardian, The Telegraph, Time Out, Blueprint Magazine amongst many others. I've also had work exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery.
We moved to Thaxted in 2006. Photographing my then young children Oli & Pip, I realised how enjoyable it was to work with children, it was a whole new challenge! Having been asked to photograph friend’s children, I was then approached by a small independent nursery to come and do their portraits, a few days a year that I always loved & a refreshing departure from my commercial work! None of us want to grow up & being a big kid helps get the best out of children, I feel very comfortable on their level, they’re fascinating & funny in equal measure.
I now have a studio at home in Thaxted, my approach to photographing young people is exactly the same as a commission to photograph a 'celebrity', ever since I’ve been a dad myself I’ve never understood why children can’t be photographed in the same way as adults. A timeless portrait should be just that, regardless of age.
